SIXTY SECONDS IN TOUCH…

first_imgWelcome to the latest edition of Sixty Seconds in Touch, live from Coffs Harbour where we are for the National 18 Years and Under Championships. We’re a little disappointed the sun isn’t right out yet, but for the moment the rain clouds are holding off, so hopefully the weather will be fine for the tournament… * The teams have all arrived in Coffs Harbour, thankfully arriving safely, with no problems on the road. Touch Football Australia (TFA) staff have been busy setting up the fields, merchandise and doing general tournament work…tournament director Jon Pratt is getting a little worried as it all seems to be going just a little too smoothly!! * A coaching forum for those who coach our Australian Youth players is being held this afternoon from 3:00-4:00pm. It will be hosted by Gary Madders, current Australian Mixed Open Coach and Cathy Gray, TFA Elite Programs Director. Others invited to attend are Peter Bell, former Australian Womens Open coach. The forum will be held in Coffs Harbour International Stadium, Marquee (Referees tent) at the rear of the Stadium. * The Opening Ceremony for the Under 18 Championships is being held tomorrow at 11:00am. Make sure you get out to the stadium for the ceremony which will be both an opening ceremony for the event and also a farewell and best wishes to the ten Australian sides that are traveling to Christchurch. New Zealand in a few weeks for the All Nations Championships. NRL players Joe Williams and John Sutton will be on hold, and Peter Bell (TFA Hall of Fame member) will be presenting the Aussie flag to the All Nations representatives. * Managers meetings are being held this afternoon at 2pm and 4pm….Managers make sure you get there!! * `From the Fishbowl’ is up and running with Kane Weeks in town for the event, make sure you check out the daily rundown from the Fishbowl…it’s sure to entertain. * Top marks to Media assistant Lisa Plummer’s champion boyfriend Tim…who had flowers delivered to Coffs Harbour for their anniversary…the room mates were very impressed! * The merchandise room is set up and overflowing with gear…make sure you check out the new gear, kooldri t-shirts, headbands, singlets, silicon wristbands and more. Also, there is a massive table with $5 gear…plenty of old t-shirts and so forth going out at $5 each! * In non-18’s Touch news, the move to sign on new affiliates is underway with Brisbane Metro Touch Association and Berserkers Touch (formerly Central Queensland University Touch) signing on first. A restructure of the sport in Australia has resulted in the affiliates (local competitions) becoming direct members of the national body. The new structure, recommended by an independent report produced in June 2004, is being implemented across Australia. Chief Executive of TFA, Kevin Thompson, said today “It is great to see that the local competitions appreciate the benefits of the new model and are signing up. The whole theme of the restructure is to reduce duplication and administration and to divert more resources to the grass roots. The players, officials and coaches in BMTA and Berserkers will be the first to benefit.” Keep an eye on the website for the upcoming full story and all the latest info on the Unitary Model of Management and Affiliation with Touch Football Australia. * The Queensland All Schools Championships have attracted a record 198 teams…make sure you keep an eye on the website this week, we’ll be talking to Queensland School Sport legend Peter Bell about the upcoming event. * Remember, results from the Under 18’s will be updated at the end of every round throughout the tournament, make sure you keep checking the website regularly.
