Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says he is satisfied that the Government has taken steps to revise its approach to achieving economic growth, by implementing “well tried and well-studied” polices that will facilitate this.While acknowledging that Jamaica is growing “very slowly” and that the figures “are not what we want,” Mr. Holness said he is confident that “we are on the right track.”The Prime Minister was speaking at the closing ceremony for the two-year pilot phase of the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ) Innovation Grant from New Ideas to Entrepreneurship (IGNITE) project, and the launch of phase two at the Spanish Court Hotel, New Kingston, on Friday (April 27).“We are doing the things that are necessary… and we are not hoping for growth to happen organically. We are right there in the field with you doing the granular things such as actually identifying the creativity and the innovativeness and we are giving those support to develop (them) into entrepreneurism, which we are supplying with the resources to create an enterprise that will grow, employ people and create the prosperity that we need,” Mr. Holness said.Lauding the DBJ for implementing IGNITE, which provides grant funding support for micro, small and medium-size enterprises (MSMEs), Mr. Holness emphasised the importance of the Government’s “instrumental” approach to business development.This, he argued, as the private sector, of which MSMEs are a part, “is the engine of growth,” noting that the latter stakeholders are pivotal to driving higher levels of economic growth.As such, the Prime Minister said it is incumbent on the Government to support entrepreneurs in expanding their businesses, as also innovators and start-ups, to create employment, an essential underlay to achieving growth.Equally important, Mr. Holness added, is creating the linkages between sectors, citing agriculture and tourism as an example.While highlighting the work of the Linkages Council, which has been established in the Ministry of Tourism, he underscored the need to ensure that businesses being developed with support from Government “are not just growing in silos, but they are linking together with each other”.“Linkages are absolutely important to growth. So (we must ensure) that the raw material, which is the product of one enterprise, becomes the raw material for the other… and that is how we start to secure growth in the economy,” he added.“Economic growth is not a mystery. It is a well-studied area and there is a suite of policies that are very well understood that have been implemented and tried across the world,” the Prime Minister said.

The weekend’s activities close out with the Turks & Caicos Football Association Beach Soccer Tournament on Sunday Dec. 8 from 11am-4pm. It is also hoped the kite boarding six will make it here on time for the opening of the resort; they are kiteboarding along colomubus path to the TCI… it would be the longest down winder relay by kiteboard ever, once Enable Passion completes the mission.
Most any content management system—enterprise or open source—is capable of basic social media functions such as commenting. But now publishers are looking for social media apps that offer a direct connection between their site and the broader social networks such as Facebook. “Two years ago, CMS was 80 percent of the focus, now maybe it’s 40 percent for a publisher,” says Dave Iannone, founder of Web development firm Go Forward Media (and architect of the FOLIOMag.com design). Many of the social networks are introducing both generic and system-specific applications to tie the CMS to their network. However, most of those applications are geared more toward open source rather than proprietary systems. Facebook Connect is an API that allows users to integrate parts of the Facebook experience into their Web site or mobile program. System-specific versions of Facebook Connect are also popping up, such as modules for open source systems like Drupal and WordPress. An article on social media blog Mashable talks about “8 of the Best Social Media Extensions for Joomla,” including the AddThis Button, which is a single method of adding major social media bookmarking and sharing applications such as Digg, Twitter and Facebook.Single Point of EntryInstant access through a single point of entry is becoming key. FastCompaany.com now allows users to sign into the Web site via the user’s Facebook account. “There are plug-ins that if you comment in one area, it let’s people know you commented everywhere else you have an account,” says Iannone. “That does away with the need for a ‘site account.’ You have to integrate in all these other places beyond what you are doing on your own site. You’re going to get more fans on Facebook and you’ll have a direct connection that’s way more valuable than e-mail.” ABA Journal, the association magazine for the American Bar Association, recently launched a program called Legal Rebels that features a standalone Web site with multi-media profiles of 50 legal profession innovators, as well as its own dedicated Facebook page for the program [see the full story on page 24]. However, the dedicated site also has links to major social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr embedded right into its CMS (Expression Engine). “It just involved signing up for each of the services (Facebook, YouTube, etc.) and adding a link on our site,” says editor and publisher Edward Adams.To keep up, some of the enterprise social media platforms such as KickApps and Ning are starting to introduce sign-on modules that can be used with sites powered by open source CMS such as Joomla, Drupal and WordPress. Social media remains a priority for most publishers but in the wake of failures of proprietary, standalone social media networks such as Variety’s “The Biz,” publishers are realizing that rather than creating community at their own sites, they need to be catching readers where they already are: Facebook and Twitter. Playboy started out building its own networking products on platforms like Ning, but now finds Facebook more cost efficient. “We’re putting more resources there and getting more response,” says director of online communities and social platforms Paul Thomas. The same is true for b-to-b publishers such as Bobit Business Media, which publishes Police. “Our editors didn’t think having a Facebook page would be worth it, but we did a search and found 600,000 users with ‘law enforcement’ in their profile,” says director of marketing and e-media Christine Oldenbrook. “We set up a fan page and had 100 fans overnight. Our editors will use it to push content while we market subscriptions through it.” Choosing Apps
After promotional emails were sent to readers informing them that new digital editions were replacing their print counterparts last Friday, Penton officially announced that its Technology Media Group, which publishes Windows IT Pro, DevPro, Power IT Pro and SQL Server Pro, among other brands, will go completely digital starting in May.Peg Miller, the company’s tech group leader, says the only remaining print title will be System iNEWS ProVIP, which is a high-end and high-priced journal. The Technology Media Group is one of about 18 different b-to-b verticals that Penton targets. Miller says the transition was triggered by a combination of signs. Research done with readers and advertisers indicated that interest was shifting to the digital platform and that was translating into an increase in digital edition readership. “Over the last year, we started seeing double-digit gains in our digital edition subscriptions—and those were a very basic edition without our full strategy,” she says. That strategy includes relaunching the digital editions with a richer media experience including audio and video.While Miller declined to provide details on the performance of the print brands. Nevertheless, Miller says the new production workflow is freeing up the content team from what was previously a print-centric approach. “This has liberated our content team from print-centric deadlines to think more about what the customers want,” she says. Miller also declined to offer details on any changes in subscription pricing and advertising rates, but notes that ads are being sold on more long-term schedules rather than the one-offs that made frequent appearances in the print editions. The staffing implications of the change are unclear at the moment and Miller says resources will continue to be looked at as the new digital production workflow is ironed out over the next year. Transitioning to all-digital formats has become a common occurrence for publishers, particularly in the technology vertical. But only a few years ago, that meant online-only. Now, of course, publishers have more platform options available to them. Ziff Davis Enterprise announced its “OmniDigital” strategy last October when it planned to take its brands all-digital, focusing on websites, mobile sites, tablets and digital editions. That plan had barely gotten underway when ZDE was sold to online lead-gen company QuinStreet in early February.

Democrats have criticized the anti-Zika component over the spending offsets Republicans relied on and language related to contraception services.Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has rebuffed demands to reopen negotiations over the conference agreement, reminding Democrats that such legislation cannot be amended.“The time for debate about the content of it is over. If we did what the Senate Democrats said they want to do, we’d get no outcome at all,” he said, reported CQ.Nevertheless, McConnell plans to hold another vote to limit debate on the conference report that would allow it to go to the floor. Similarly, McConnell also plans to hold a second vote to advance the chamber’s FY 2017 defense spending bill, after Democrats last week blocked it from advancing.Senate Democrats say they won’t allow the defense spending bill to go ahead because they don’t trust Republicans to complete the rest of the appropriations process.“What we don’t want is defense-only appropriations and everything else in a CR [continuing resolution],” said Sen. Poor performance ratings for Montgomery, Ala., schools are harming the city and the ability of Air University located at Maxwell AFB to recruit faculty, reports the Montgomery Advertiser. Lt. Gen. Anthony Cotton, the school’s commander, said 56 percent of the airmen in last year’s Air War College came to Montgomery without their families, primarily due to the school system’s reputation. … President Trump on Friday signed legislation reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration for five years, extending eligibility for the Military Airport Program to installations closed after Jan. 1, 1966. The program currently is limited to installations whose closure or realignment was announced after Sept. 30, 1977, which generally limits participants to bases closed or realigned since the BRAC era began. Entertainment Weekly Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin won’t hit theaters until May, but we got a look at a handful pictures from the movie, Wednesday. Entertainment Weekly magazine has new photos of Aladdin, Jasmine, Jafar and Genie (played by Will Smith), who you might remember from the 1992 animated film. Mena Massoud, who plays Aladdin, also tweeted the photos joking, “This is what is looks like when Genie tells Aladdin what he wants for Christmas,” referencing a photo with Massoud and Smith.
