The Special Edition ‘Gold Collection’ ‘Stargazer’ Lottie doll is a collaboration with the European Space Agency, and winner of the ‘Little Scientist’ Space Age Award at the New York Toy Fair 2015.Company employees, including co-founder Ian Harkin from Ballybofey, watched as the rocket containing Lottie took off today.Six year old Abigail is the star of a short video by female filmmaker Elena Rossini about the girl who has designed the first doll to go into space.Stargazer Lottie will visit the International Space Station along with British ESA astronaut Tim Peake in December 2015, travelling ahead on board Orbital ATK’s “S.S. Deke Slayton II” Cygnus cargo spacecraft. The Cygnus spacecraft launched aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.Abigail’s idea for an astronomy themed doll to help other kids learn about space was the inspiration behind the Stargazer Lottie doll.During her time on board the ISS, Stargazer Lottie will fulfil her mission to get kids interested in space. Supplemental materials are available to download from the website, including biographies of notable women in astronomy, and educational activities created by UNAWE, the global science educational outreach programme. The video shows Abigail at home with her brother and Mom Zoe in Comox, British Colombia, Canada, talking about her passion for space. Her words capture the specialness and magical wonder of childhood, and the importance of letting children be children, and enjoy their childhood, with unfettered hope and idealistic dreams for the future.Mom Zoe explains how she emailed Arklu, the co behind the award-winning Lottie line of dolls, to say that Abigail’s passion for all things space related had given her the idea for an astronomy themed doll. Her idea caught the attention of toyco Arklu who created the Stargazer Lottie doll, in collaboration with ESA, the European Space Agency, and with help from Dr. Karen Masters, a real life female astronomer at Portsmouth University. When previewed at the New York Toy Fair 2015, the doll won the prestigious ‘Young Scientists’ award, who said “This doll was one of our favorite things at Toy Fair, hands down. The creator’s mission to get young girls interested in astronomy is laudable, and the doll itself is perfect for a young child first exploring the cosmos.”The Lottie doll line was launched in 2012 by Arklu cofounders Ian Harkin from Ballybofey and Lucie Follett, has won several industry awards on account of its innovative focus on being a doll with a realistic body shape and emphasis on activities that stimulate imaginative play. Lottie is now on sale in 30 countries.LIFT-OFF!
