Exclusive – Koeman is a ‘perfect fit’ as Southampton manager, says former Saints star

first_imgFormer defender Graeme Le Saux has told talkSPORT that Ronald Koeman is a “perfect fit” as Southampton manager. The Saints have enjoyed an emphatic start to the campaign under their new boss, with the side currently sitting second in the Premier League following three consecutive top flight victories, while a 2-1 win over Arsenal on Tuesday booked their spot in the last-16 of the League Cup.Their success has come as a big surprise for most, with the south coast side widely tipped for a relegation battle after seeing manager Mauricio Pochettino and a host of star players leave this summer. And Le Saux believes Koeman, as well as the players who decided to remain at the club despite the mass exodus, deserves a lot of credit for their current high-flying form.“It’s a fantastic start to the season for Southampton and that says everything about the quality of manager the club brought in,” the former defender told Drivetime.“Ronald Koeman is a perfect fit for the club, he’s still a younger manager and he has great history as a player.“Of course there will be a reality check at some point, but they’ve played very well and deserve to be where they are in the league.“Their form is a credit to the players who stayed. When the big names go you can often feel that the club isn’t very ambitious and that you have to move on to fulfil your potential.“But instead they’ve enjoyed a great start to the season and it’s made all those players feel like they have a lot to offer, and Southampton has a lot to offer them.“They’re second in the table, above Liverpool and Manchester United who took all their best players.“That will give the Southampton team a boost and certainly Koeman is doing a fantastic job there.”last_img
