FARC Attack in Colombia Kills Police Officer and Child

first_img A police officer and a child were killed, and 27 people were injured, nine of which are in serious condition, in an attack attributed to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) insurgency, which is under peace negotiations with the Colombian government, a local civil authority reported on February 12. The attack was perpetrated in the town of Miraflores, district of Guaviare, on the evening of February 11. A grenade was thrown and gunfire from assault rifles was shot from the mountains, near a group of firefighters, police officers, and town dwellers that were trying to put out a house fire, Mayor Julio César González told Caracol private radio station. The attack was attributed to the FARC and then detained by police officers stationed in town, who received air military support, he added. The grenade killed a surveillance police officer and a 10-year old child when it exploded, while injuring 27 others, mostly children. Nine of them are in serious condition, and had to be transported by air to the city of Villavicencio, capital of Meta department, located 100 km east of Bogotá, the mayor reported. The FARC, which is the main insurgency group in Colombia with about 8,000 combatants, is holding peace talks with President Santos’s government since last November in Cuba, without a bilateral ceasefire. Santos has requested the military forces “not to lower their guard” against the FARC, and he ordered to increase military actions against the guerrillas, the oldest insurgency in Latin America.
